MM virus was first isolated and described by Jungeblut and Dalldorf. It is classified with the encephalomyocarditis (EMC) group of viruses which includes Columbia SK, EMC, F, Mengo, and SVW. Members of this group appear to be immunologically indistinguishable strains of a single virus, but different strains have different growth requirements.
